Big boy in the tent

He loved the tent. He's wearing his full-body leash, which in one of my most effective marketing campaigns ever I christened his "fire-man belt." The only problem was he kept asking to ride in a fire truck. Posted by Picasa

A river runs through it

Do all kids insist on getting as close as possible to running water? Posted by Picasa

Dinner time

We grilled our own hot dogs and bratwurst. Most people brought fast food! Spencer also found this baseball bat someone else brought and kept it close by. Posted by Picasa

Yummy tatoes

Spencer loved the dutch-oven potatoes provided by the ward. He had three helpings. Posted by Picasa

Playing "et-ball"

Spencer loves all sports, particularly basketball and football, which he calls, "et-ball." He saw the teenagers throwing it around and hung around there for about 30 minutes, saying quietly that he wanted to play. They got sick of waiting for him to hold it the requisite 30 seconds or so and then throw it one foot in front of him. I had to drag him away screaming. (I don't know what he's doing with his left hand here - he's never seen an major league baseball game). Posted by Picasa

More etball

I just thought this was a cute photo. Posted by Picasa

With his "guys"

Spencer was the youngest at the campout by about three years. As the night wore on he became fascinated by the older boys running around together. During the campfire program they got bored and were running around, so he had to join them. This meant I got to follow them around for an hour and keep him out of trouble, much to his dismay. This is Logan Scofield, 5, who I happen to home teach. He has always been very kind to Spencer and would kind of look after him as they ran around. Spencer took to calling Logan and they other boys "my guys." I swear I'm not making it up, and we have also never told him about Tim and B's "guys." Whenever Spence heard some yelling and running, he would say urgently, "My guys!" and start arching his back and kicking to get off my lap and go find them. Posted by Picasa

Hunting for raccoons

They would run around trying to find thickets and bushes and little caves in the canyon wall where "raccoons" lived. This shows when they climbed inside a bush and hid there for a while. Posted by Picasa

Getting ready for bed

Spencer loves being in a sleeping bag. Once his "guys" went in their tents, too, he started asking to get his PJs on and get in his sleeping bag. But whenever he heard another little boy talk, he thought they were outside having fun. He would sit up and say, "My guys! Wogan? Wogan?" Posted by Picasa

All the way under

I think he believes that to be in a sleeping bag means to have all of yourself in it. He liked to have it cover his face. This is the famous "map sleeping bag" that Amy had growing up. Each of our kids picks it first when given the choice. Posted by Picasa

Waiting for breakfast

Because of his busy night, Spence slept in until Dad was in line to get him some "breah-fest," as he calls it. He still twirls his hair when he is tired. (Isn't it funny how the 16-year-old is just as awkward about this arrangement as Spencer is?) Posted by Picasa

A waterfall!

After breakfast we went exploring and we found a waterfall! It's spring run-off time so it was quite a lot of water for the size of the stream. Spencer really liked it, but he got sick of having his picture taken. Posted by Picasa

Saying thank you

When we were all packed up to go we walked over to Bro. Finlinson, who had been in charge of the campout. With prompting, Spencer said, "Gank you brudder nun-nun-son." Bro. F scooched down to try to hear him and (without prompting) Spencer ran into him and gave him a hug (they had never previously spoken). Posted by Picasa
