Carding wool

At one of the pioneer housees we got to learn how to card, spin and weave wool. Here the kids got to practice carding (or smoothing) the rough wool so it could be spun. We found out this was an important little kid job when they were done with their other chores.

The restored school house came complete with desks, individual slates and chalk, and a cute pioneer teacher. This was Catherine's favorite part. 

A fun wagon ride

As part of our fun experience we got to go for a wagon ride. Notice Spencer's hat - he calls it his "farmer hat" so he loves to wear it. He was so excited to wear it to the "pioneer park" as he called it. He also like the horses pulling the wagon and the cows we saw a long the way.

Singing in the Rain

For our Family Home Evening activity last week we let the kids play outside in the rain. It felt WONDERFUL after two weeks of 100+ degree temperatures. The kids were also very excited to use their new rain gear from Walmar. The girls love their umbrella's (inspired by Marta's pink parasol) and Spencer loves his self-titled "raining coat."

24th of July celebration

In Utah, our state commemoration is celebrated on July 24th - since that is the day the first pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. It's also a great reason to light more fireworks in July. Following a BBQ, we usually we have "Poppy's fireworks" but this year Michael took on that weighty responsibility. We all enjoyed the impressive display and then the kids ran around with sparklers.

Michael and David were having a nice chat before bed one night.

It finally rained here after 10 straight days of over 100 degree temperatures. The kids immediately grabbed their "raining coats," as Spencer calls them, and ran out in it. Wait until the page fully loads, then click the "play arrow" and you should see the clip. Let me know how it works.
